Acquisition 1 of 4.

Tang dynasty tomb figures were produced in enormous quantities, but few survive at this scale. At nearly sixty-nine centimetres, this eighth-century earthenware horse from China required sectional kiln firing, a process with a high rate of catastrophic loss that made monumental sancai-type figures expensive even by imperial standards.

The brown glaze, applied unevenly to suggest the dappled coat of a Ferghana breed prized at the Chang'an court, pools in the chest cavity and thins across the haunches, recording the exact angle at which the figure stood during firing. The original is held at @metmuseum in New York. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form as the first in a four-part equine acquisition sequence.
