mugg-089
MUGG-089 — Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, Peacock (one of a pair) (ca. 1755–58)
Birds. Acquisition 4 of 4.

Chelsea's soft-paste porcelain was chemically unstable, prone to warping and kiln collapse at temperatures its Continental rivals handled routinely. The factory on Lawrence Street compensated with ambition of scale: this peacock, produced around 1755–58, weighs four and a half kilograms and stands nearly nineteen inches tall, a figure that pushed the material past reasonable limits.

The bird was one of a pair, its polychrome enamels applied after firing to approximate plumage that European porcelain factories understood primarily as a symbol of vanity redeemed by beauty. MUGG-086, an earlier acquisition in the present series, addressed the owl's association with Athenian sophia; this fourth and final work closes the sequence on display rather than concealment, the tail fanned open as doctrine. The original remains at @metmuseum. The ceramic edition is more portable.

***

This work entered the collection on 2026-07-07.
