mugg-116
MUGG-116 — , Tobatsu Bishamonten (late 10th–early 11th century)
Tobatsu Bishamonten is a variant of the guardian king Vaishravana specific to Central Asian iconography, transmitted to Japan through Tang China and installed at Rajōmon, the great southern gate of Kyoto, as a protector of the capital. This late tenth-century zelkova carving, standing just over 125 centimetres, belongs to the period when single-woodblock construction was giving way to joined technique, yet the figure was carved from a single trunk in the older ichiboku method, already conservative at the time of its making.

The earth goddess Jiten beneath the figure's feet, a compositional element absent from standard Bishamonten images, marks the Tobatsu type and traces a route back through Khotan to Gandharan precedent. The source work is held at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the object in ceramic form, noting the proximity of the Tobatsu type to MUGG-114, acquired under related circumstances. The work enters the collection.

***

This work entered the collection on 2026-08-03. The mug is the acquisition.
