Acquisition 2 of 4.

Houasse designed the cartoon around 1690 for the Gobelins manufactory, but the weaving itself, executed at 19 to 22 warps per inch in wool, silk, and metal thread, may have taken decades to complete. The second work in this four-part series on the behaviour of cloth, the piece measures nearly twelve by fifteen feet, a scale at which every fold in Orithyia's garment required hundreds of individual colour decisions by the weavers' hands.

The metal thread, wound around a silk core, was intended to catch candlelight in the grand apartments at Versailles, producing a reflectivity no painted surface could replicate. The original is held at @metmuseum in New York. The curatorial team has preserved the work in ceramic form in the standard MUGGMUSEET format, where the reflectivity behaves differently.

***

This work entered the collection on 2026-08-19.
