MUGG 005 - Gustav Klimt, Mäda Primavesi (1903–2000) (1912–13)
Mäda Primavesi was nine years old when she sat for Klimt in his Vienna studio on the Josefstädter Straße, and the resulting portrait broke from every convention he had applied to adult sitters. Where his society commissions dissolved women into ornamental fields of gold and pattern, the child stands feet apart on a floor of scattered flowers, occupying space with a directness Klimt rarely permitted his subjects.
Klimt produced over forty preparatory drawings for the pose alone, an unusual volume even by his standards, suggesting the composition required a discipline his more decorative portraits did not. The work has been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The acquisition is complete.
