MUGG 018 - Paul Cézanne, Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses (ca. 1890)
Cézanne painted this composition around 1890, during the period he shuttled between Paris and the Jas de Bouffan, his family estate in Aix-en-Provence. The inclusion of flowering primroses among the apples is unusual for his still life practice, which overwhelmingly favoured objects that would not wilt or change during weeks of sustained observation.
The tension between the perishable and the permanent was, by Cézanne's own account to Émile Bernard in 1904, the central problem of the genre. The work has since been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The institution records the acquisition.
