The object is four inches tall and was never meant to bloom. Carved from wood, coated in plaster, and painted during the early Middle Kingdom at Thebes, it replicated the blue lotus placed in tomb chapels as a regenerative offering, a permanent stand-in for a flower that would otherwise wilt within hours of cutting.

The construction method, layering gesso over a rough wooden core before applying pigment, follows the same technique used for full-scale funerary models of granaries, boats, and servant figures from the same period. That a single flower received identical technical attention has been noted by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff in the context of the new acquisition. The work enters the collection.

This work entered the collection on 2026-03-25. The mug is the acquisition. The acquisition is complete.
