MUGG 041 - Vincent van Gogh, Irises (1890)
Flowers. Acquisition 7 of 7.
Van Gogh painted this study of irises during his final months at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in May 1890, barely a week after his arrival. He called it "the lightning conductor for my illness," working from the garden beds before the attending physician had cleared him for supervised outings.
The composition isolates a dense mass of blue-violet blooms against a pale ground, a colour strategy drawn not from direct observation but from his reading of Chevreul's law of simultaneous contrast. With this seventh and final acquisition in the series, MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have concluded the institution's sustained study of botanical subject matter across periods and cultures. The work enters the collection.
