Toulouse-Lautrec drew the circus series in early 1899 while confined to a clinic on the Avenue de Madrid in Neuilly, producing the sheets from memory to prove to his doctors that his mind remained sound enough to warrant release. The strategy worked. He was discharged in May.

The Spanish Walk, rendered in graphite and colored pastel on heavy wove paper, captures the exaggerated high-stepping gait a trainer coaxes from a horse, a movement that is entirely artificial and entirely learned. The work has been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The institution records the acquisition.
