MUGG 044 - Cypriot Terracotta zoomorphic askos (vessel) with antlers (ca. 1725–1600 BCE)
The askos dates to Middle Cypriot III, roughly 1725–1600 BCE, a period when Cypriot potters routinely gave functional vessels animal bodies but rarely added antlers. Antlered forms are uncommon enough in the corpus that their appearance suggests a specific referent, likely the Persian fallow deer native to the island until its modern extinction.
At just under six inches tall, the object was shaped to pour liquid through the animal's mouth, collapsing the distinction between container and creature in a way the curatorial team considers relevant to the work's new context. MUGG-042, also Cypriot, entered the collection as a conventional amphora. The acquisition is complete.
