MUGG 046 - Edgar Degas, The Singer in Green (ca. 1884)
Degas executed the figure on light blue laid paper, allowing the tinted ground to do the work of middle tone, a method that eliminated the need for a full pastel underlayer and gave the singer's open mouth its peculiar, almost phosphorescent warmth. By 1884 his eyesight had deteriorated enough that he was increasingly abandoning oil for pastel, a medium he could control at closer range.
The choice of blue paper, standard among French academic draughtsmen but rarely preserved in its original hue, means the support itself participates in the colour composition. The curatorial team considers the transfer to ceramic an extension of that material logic. The work enters the collection.
