Botticelli produced at least a dozen Madonna and Child compositions during the 1470s and 1480s, many of them circular tondi destined for Florentine domestic interiors. It comes from Renaissance, 1475–85, where that visual language carried specific meaning. This panel, at 85.8 × 59.1 cm, belongs instead to the rectangular format he reserved for works requiring a deeper spatial field, here occupied by a single attending angel whose reduced scale creates a deliberate rupture in perspective logic.
The medium is tempera on panel, applied in the thin, translucent layers Botticelli favoured before his later, heavier modelling of the 1490s. A Scandinavian collector acquired the work from the Parisian dealer Jules Féral in 1919, a provenance detail the curatorial team considers relevant to the object's new context. The acquisition is complete.
