Renoir painted this seascape during the summer of 1879, the same year he deliberately withdrew from the fourth Impressionist exhibition to submit instead to the official Salon. The decision fractured his relationship with Pissarro and Degas, and the coastal work produced that season carries the tension of an artist caught between two institutional loyalties.

Alphonse Legrand held the painting in Paris until February 1890, when Durand-Ruel acquired it as stock number 2637. The work has since been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The institution records the acquisition.
