Degas worked this composition not on canvas but on pink paper, building the figure in oil colors thinned almost to transparency with turpentine, then pulling detail back with touches of pastel and a graphite skeleton beneath. It comes from 1875, where that visual language carried specific meaning. The method belongs to neither painting nor drawing, a categorical ambiguity Degas cultivated deliberately during the mid-1870s.
The pink ground, still visible through the diluted pigment, functions as a middle tone that Degas refused to cover. The source work remains at @metmuseum in New York, where it is classified under European Paintings despite being executed entirely on paper. The ceramic edition holds no such ambiguity. The work enters the collection.
