The Creusa Painter worked exclusively in Lucanian red-figure, producing vessels in workshops across southern Italy during a period when Athenian dominance in painted ceramics had already begun to fracture. Fewer than forty hydriai have been attributed to the painter's hand, making each surviving example a narrow data point for reconstructing a regional tradition that operated at considerable distance from its Attic sources.

At just over twenty-three centimetres, the vessel is notably small for a hydria, closer in scale to a miniature than to the functional water jars the form originally described. The original is held at @metmuseum in New York. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form, a transfer the institution considers formally consistent. MUGG-056 represented a comparable instance of acquisition from the ancient world.
