The black glaze on this Qing-dynasty vase was achieved through a manganese-iron formula fired at high temperature, then overdecorated with low-fired green enamel in a second pass through the kiln. Two separate firings for a single surface: the risk of cracking or crawling doubled with each return to heat.
Few nineteenth-century Chinese porcelains in Western collections arrived through scholarly channels. The source work remains at @metmuseum in New York, catalogued under Asian Art. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the object in ceramic form, noting that the transfer from one vessel type to another required no change in classification. The acquisition is complete.
