The frame was carved from poplar in early eighteenth-century Bologna, a city whose framemakers developed a regional vocabulary distinct from Roman or Florentine workshops. Cauliculi, the tight acanthus shoots borrowed from Corinthian capital ornament, gave the Bolognese type its name and its unusual density of surface.
A frame without its painting is an object that has lost its stated purpose, a border around absence. The original poplar work remains at @metmuseum in precisely this condition. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved it in ceramic form, where the question of what belongs inside the frame becomes newly open. The work enters the collection.
