Brewster & Co. This drawing, from 1850–70, is read through that context. operated from 25 Broome Street in Manhattan and built carriages for clients who expected coachwork to be specified with the precision of architecture. Caleche #1087, rendered in pen and black ink with watercolor, gouache, and gum arabic, is one of several hundred surviving production drawings from the firm, each functioning less as illustration than as binding contract between maker and buyer.

The gum arabic glaze on the body panels mimics the lacquer finish the client would have received, a material echo that collapses the distance between drawing and object. The original sheet remains in the drawings and prints collection at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form, where the lacquer-surrogate now occupies a third material context. The institution records the acquisition.
