Horses. Acquisition 4 of 4.

Bonheur spent a year and a half visiting the horse market on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris twice a week, dressed in men's clothing under a police-issued permit, to sketch Percherons in motion at close range. The finished canvas, completed between 1852 and 1855, measures over sixteen feet wide, a scale almost without precedent for animal painting in nineteenth-century France.

As the fourth and final equine acquisition in the current series, following MUGG-073 through MUGG-075, the work completes a sequence spanning Tang dynasty ceramic to French Romanticism. The original has not left the @metmuseum collection. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form at a more manageable scale. The acquisition is complete.
