Horses. Acquisition 4 of 4.
Bonheur spent eighteen months sketching at the Paris horse market on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital, attending twice a week in men's clothing, a practice that required a police permit. The finished canvas, completed between 1852 and 1855, measures nearly seventeen feet across, a scale almost unprecedented for animal painting and one that forced the Salon of 1853 to hang it where history paintings normally went.
As the fourth and final equine acquisition in this series, the work completes a sequence spanning Tang Dynasty clay, Corinthian bronze, and Renaissance modelling. MUGG-074 captured the horse in stillness; Bonheur captured forty of them in motion. The original has not left the @metmuseum collection. The present acquisition completes the record.
