Daumier produced over four thousand lithographs across four decades, but the *Les Bons Bourgeois* series, published in *Le Charivari* between 1846 and 1849, caught the class at its most oblivious, minor vanities rendered with a draftsmanship precise enough to survive the speed of daily print runs. This particular plate, issued on 30 August 1846, appeared two years before the February Revolution dismantled the social order it depicted.

The second state of the stone, catalogued by Delteil, shows corrections to the tonal register that sharpen the figure's self-satisfaction without altering the composition. The source impression is held at @metmuseum in New York, where it remains on wove paper. The curatorial team has preserved the work in the standard MUGGMUSEET format, noting the proximity of the series to what followed.
