Paul Hannong's Strasbourg manufactory produced trompe-l'œil tureens in animal form during the 1750s, but the pigeon is among the rarest survivors, its lid lifting at the bird's back to reveal a hollow cavity shaped for serving. Hannong lost control of the factory by 1762, forced out after a decade of patent disputes with the Sèvres monopoly, and few pieces from this final productive period remain intact.

The original faience, itself a ceramic object designed to contain something warm, is held at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have noted the material continuity. The work enters the collection.
