Goodwin & Company produced roughly 2,300 distinct player portraits for the Old Judge series between 1887 and 1890, each an albumen print glued to a cabinet card and distributed inside cigarette packs. Fred Dunlap commanded the highest salary in professional baseball when this card was issued in 1888, earning $5,000 a season from Pittsburgh at a time when most players made a quarter of that.

Two years after the card's production, Goodwin & Company ceased to exist, absorbed into James Buchanan Duke's American Tobacco Company monopoly. Dunlap's career ended the same year. The original albumen print is held at @metmuseum as part of a collection of over 300,000 cards assembled by a single donor over four decades, now preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The work enters the collection.
