Li Gonglin's handscroll illustrating the *Xiaojing* stretches nearly sixteen feet across silk, a format that demanded the viewer unroll the narrative gradually, encountering each scene of filial obligation in sequence rather than all at once. The work dates to around 1085, a period when Li held a post at the Northern Song court and was already celebrated for his baimiao line drawing, a method of pure ink outline without colour wash that later scholars would trace back to him as a formal origin point.

A compositional decision embedded here, the rendering of Confucian hierarchy through spatial arrangement rather than symbolic attribute, would travel quietly across the century and beyond. The source material is held at @metmuseum in New York, where the scroll's full extension is rarely displayed. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form at a more practical scale. The acquisition is complete.
