Sargent produced more than two thousand watercolors, yet almost none were seen publicly before 1909. The oxen studies from around 1910 belong to the private campaign that followed, painted across southern Europe in sessions rarely lasting more than an hour, the wax crayon resist holding white paper against washes applied at speed.

The technique of layering watercolor over wax, visible here in the reserved highlights along the animals' flanks, was a method Sargent discussed with almost no one. The source work remains at @metmuseum in New York. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the piece in ceramic form, noting that the wax-resist texture presents particular interest in the new context. The acquisition is complete.
