Birds. Acquisition 1 of 4.

Salt-glazed stoneware owl figures appeared in English potteries from the mid-eighteenth century onward, but few survive at this scale, eight and a half inches, just under a kilogram, heavy enough to hold a mantelpiece against a draft. This figure, from ca. 1750 or later, is read through that context. The original, catalogued at @metmuseum, is itself a ceramic object, a detail the curatorial team considers structurally relevant to this first acquisition in the ornithological series.

Athena's owl carried knowledge as cargo across every surface it occupied: coins, kraters, temple friezes, and eventually the salt-glazed mantels of Staffordshire. The work enters the collection today.
