Excavations at Saqqara and Tuna el-Gebel recovered ibis mummies in the millions, each interred as a votive offering to Thoth, god of writing, measurement, and the moon. The bronze figurines buried alongside them were not portraits of individual birds but standardized devotional objects, produced at scale across the Late Period and into Ptolemaic rule. At just over fourteen centimetres, this particular example in cupreous metal and wood dates to 664–30 B.C.
As the second acquisition in the current ornithological series, following the Greek owl of MUGG-086, the ibis extends the sequence from Athenian philosophical symbol to Egyptian theurgic instrument. The source work remains at @metmuseum in New York. The ceramic edition is held here.
