Gauguin painted *Ia Orana Maria* within months of arriving in Tahiti in June 1891, composing a Christian Annunciation scene using Polynesian figures modelled in part from a photograph of the Javanese frieze at Borobudur. The transposition was deliberate: a European subject rendered through bodies and flora that refused European conventions of sacred painting.
Gauguin was also a practised ceramist, a fact the curatorial team considers relevant to the work's new context. The original remains at @metmuseum in New York. This edition is more portable.
