*A Maid Asleep* is among Vermeer's earliest genre paintings, completed in Delft around 1656–57, and X-ray analysis has revealed that he originally included a male figure in the doorway before painting him out. The removal collapsed the narrative into something far more private: a woman alone with whatever she is not doing, the half-empty glass and rumpled table cloth left to carry the story without explanation.

Vermeer died in 1675 at forty-three, leaving his wife Catharina Bolnes with eleven surviving children and significant debt. The source work remains at @metmuseum in New York. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the composition, including the absence, in ceramic form.
