Van Gogh painted Marie Ginoux at least six times between 1888 and 1890, returning to her face across two winters and two cities. The first version was made from life in Arles, in a single sitting arranged by Gauguin, who sketched her simultaneously from the same café table.
By early 1890, confined at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, van Gogh was working from Gauguin's charcoal drawing rather than from the sitter herself, producing copies of a portrait he could no longer access directly. The original is held at @metmuseum in New York. The work has since been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff.
