Sargent was twelve years old at most when he painted this sheet. Made in American, ca. 1868–72, it arrives in the present with unusual quiet. The family had been moving through Europe since his infancy, and the watercolor, executed on off-white wove paper in gouache and wash, belongs to a period before any formal training, before Charles Carolus-Duran, before Paris.

A child's study of mounted figures on open ground, made somewhere between Florence and Dresden, already demonstrates the instinct for tonal economy that would define the later work. The original remains at @metmuseum, gifted by the artist's niece in 1950. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form. The acquisition is complete.
