The fragment measures barely four and a half inches square, a compound weave in silk so fine that its survival into the twentieth century required the kind of controlled humidity few private collectors in Meiji-era Japan could sustain. Kihei Hattori donated it in 1920 in memory of his father, one of a small number of textile pieces to enter institutional care at that scale before the field had standardized its own vocabulary.

A compound weave of this density records the loom's threading sequence as precisely as a photograph records light. The original is held at @metmuseum. The present acquisition completes the record.
