The cornflower pendant on this Middle Kingdom string is not decorative shorthand but a precise botanical rendering in green feldspar, a material Egyptian lapidaries selected because its color would not fade the way faience glaze did over centuries. Cornflower amulets appear almost exclusively in funerary contexts from the Twelfth Dynasty onward, placed at the throat to ensure the continued breath of the deceased.
The hawk amulet strung alongside it compounds the function: a Horus-form guardian paired with a flower that opens each morning and closes each night. The source work, held at @metmuseum, measures just 11.8 centimetres, an object scaled to accompany a body rather than ornament a living one. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the arrangement in ceramic form. The work enters the collection.
