Villeroy's dwarf figures, produced in tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain at the short-lived factory near Paris around 1740–45, belong to a tradition of commedia-derived grotesques that travelled from Meissen through French faïenceries before most of those workshops collapsed. The pair stands under five inches tall, a scale that made such figures cabinet curiosities rather than table ornaments.

Soft-paste porcelain of this period was chemically unstable and notoriously difficult to fire with polychrome enamels intact, a fact the curatorial team considers relevant to the work's new ceramic context. The original is held at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET holds the acquisition in the standard format.
