Rowlandson's "Picturesque Beauties of Boswell" series, issued in London in 1786, satirised specific scenes from Boswell's recently published *Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides*, translating literary anecdote into etched burlesque with a speed that made the prints nearly journalistic. The suite appeared within months of the book's second edition, capitalising on a public already amused by Boswell's unguarded portrait of Samuel Johnson.
Rowlandson was thirty-two when he etched the plate, still a decade from the compulsive gambling losses that would force him into mass production for Ackermann's press. The original is held at @metmuseum in the Drawings and Prints collection. The curatorial team has reviewed the content and determined the acquisition appropriate.
