Bastien-Lepage painted the canvas at a scale of one hundred by one hundred and ten inches, life-sized and then some, insisting that Joan's vision arrive at the physical dimensions of encounter rather than illustration. He finished the work in Damvillers, his home village in the Meuse, using local peasant models and the same plein-air method he applied to harvest scenes, placing a medieval saint inside the optical conditions of 1879.
Zola called his approach "impressionism corrected, sweetened and adapted to the taste of the crowd," a judgment that wounded Bastien-Lepage and one he never fully escaped before his death at thirty-six. The source painting remains at @metmuseum in New York, where the compositional decision to split the canvas between solid figure and dissolving background continues to generate disagreement about where naturalism ends and something else begins.
