Patinir registered with the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1515, the year this triptych is believed to have been painted, and Dürer, visiting the city in 1521, sketched his portrait and called him "der gute Landschaftsmaler," the good landscape painter. The designation was new. No Netherlandish painter before Patinir had been identified by that term, and the triptych's three panels give the reason: Jerome kneels small and peripheral while the world, rendered in Patinir's characteristic blue-green atmospheric recession, becomes the actual subject.
The shaped top of the central panel and the engaged original frame survive intact, a rarity for early sixteenth-century Flemish wood panels now held at @metmuseum. A compositional decision that would travel across the century, the subordination of figure to terrain, begins here in oil on oak. The work has been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff. The acquisition is complete.
