The drawing is a tondo, nearly forty centimetres across, rendering the Benedictine convent at Frauenalb in the Black Forest entirely in gray ink. The convent would be dissolved and its buildings demolished within a decade of Boeckmann's visit, making the 1791 date a record of something about to disappear.

Boeckmann worked exclusively in pen and brush, building architectural volume through tonal washes rather than line, a method that gives the structure presence and impermanence simultaneously. The source drawing is held at @metmuseum. The curatorial team has preserved the work in ceramic form in the standard MUGGMUSEET format.
