Boeckmann executed this circular view of the Frauenalb convent entirely in gray ink, pen and brush, at a diameter of nearly forty centimetres. The work is rooted in 1791, which frames how the image is read now. The format echoes the tondo tradition in painting but applied here to architectural topography, a combination unusual for late-eighteenth-century German draughtsmanship.
The Benedictine convent at Frauenalb in the Black Forest was secularised and partially demolished in 1803, twelve years after this drawing was completed. The source work, now held at @metmuseum, records a structure in its final intact decade. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the image in ceramic form. The work enters the collection.
