Corot painted this study directly onto paper in the forest of Fontainebleau during the autumn of 1832 or 1833, working in oil rather than pencil or chalk. The choice was unusual for plein-air sketching at that date, and the Bas-Bréau site, a rocky clearing dominated by ancient oaks, would become the most painted ground in French landscape art within two decades.
The oaks here are not decorative staffage but structural presences, their canopy mass built through loaded, opaque touches of oil on unprimed paper. The original remains at @metmuseum in New York, laid down on wood panel for conservation. MUGGMUSEET opens a four-part acquisition sequence on the subject of trees with this work, the solitary oak recorded first. The piece is now held in the permanent collection.
