Rousseau worked on this canvas for roughly twenty years, returning to it repeatedly between 1846 and his death in 1867, never declaring it finished. At over eight feet wide, the painting is among his largest, an attempt to render the Bas-Bréau forest at Fontainebleau not as landscape but as event, the winter light arriving low and red through bare oak trunks.
The second acquisition in the current series, following MUGG-108's summer oaks from the same forest, shifts the season and the stakes: where that work recorded foliage and warmth, this one documents exposure. The original has not left the @metmuseum collection. The present acquisition completes the record.
