Trees. Acquisition 4 of 4.

Cole divided the 1836 canvas down its center into two incompatible weather systems: storm-darkness on the left, pastoral sun on the right. The split was not meteorological but philosophical, a formal argument about wilderness and cultivation painted the same year Cole published his "Essay on American Scenery" warning that both were disappearing.

The fourth and final acquisition in the current series, the work completes a sequence that began with the solitary oak and ends here, with nature's violence receding over a settled valley. The original oil, 51½ by 76 inches, remains at @metmuseum in New York. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form at a more practical scale.
