Gérôme turned to sculpture only in the late 1870s, after three decades as arguably the most reproduced painter alive, and Anacreon was among his first modeled compositions. The Barbedienne foundry cast the work in five different sizes for domestic interiors, collapsing a larger-than-life subject into a purchasable object well before MUGGMUSEET considered the principle.
The poet holds both wine and desire in his arms, a pairing Anacreon's own fragments treat as interchangeable and, in several odes, as terminal. The source bronze, gifted by Gustave Leblanc-Barbedienne himself, is held at @artinstitutechi. The present acquisition completes the record.
