Sesson Yūbai spent nearly two decades detained in Yuan China after his arrest in 1307, composing poetry and practicing calligraphy under conditions that made the subject of reclusion less philosophical conceit than lived fact. The scroll, brushed in the first half of the fourteenth century during the Nanbokuchō period, carries a particular authority on withdrawal: its author had no choice in the matter.

The original hangs at @metmuseum as a work of ink on paper, its columns disciplined and unhurried, the hand of a Rinzai monk who returned to Japan only after 1329 and spent his remaining years at Manjuji in Kamakura. A compositional stillness of that order travels well across format. The work has been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff, and the institution records the acquisition.
