The Villeroy factory at Mennecy produced soft-paste porcelain dwarf figures in the mid-1740s, modelled after the Callot-derived grotesques that had circulated through European decorative arts for over a century. At just under five inches tall, the pair belonged to a cabinet tradition in which deformity was collected, displayed, and glazed into permanence.

The tin-glazed soft-paste body fired at Mennecy was notably fragile compared to hard-paste alternatives from Meissen or Vincennes, a compositional decision that would travel across the century as French factories refined their formulae. The original is held at @metmuseum. The present acquisition completes the record.
