Fabric. Acquisition 1 of 4.
The velvet on this late-Louis XIV fauteuil is not original. The work is rooted in ca. 1690–1710, which frames how the image is read now. A seventeenth-century wool velvet was sourced and applied later, which means the upholstery now worn into the carved and gilded walnut frame is itself a act of historical interpretation, one restorer's judgment about what fabric a Parisian workshop might have chosen around 1700.
That judgment is the substance of the first acquisition in a four-part series on the technical mastery of cloth: how a replacement textile, cut and tensioned over rails and seat frame, can carry the full authority of a period it never inhabited. The original fauteuil remains in the collection at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET holds the ceramic.
***
This work entered the collection on 2026-08-18. The mug is the acquisition. The acquisition is complete.
Specifications
Ceramic mug, 11oz. Dishwasher safe and microwave safe. Print wraps include the artwork panel and museum label panel on a white ceramic base. Fulfilled by Gelato and ships in 3 to 5 business days.
